PwC Chair 2011-2012
As of 1 September 2011, Tilburg University and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have appointed Professor Philip Baker to the fifth annually rotating Chair of the PricewaterhouseCoopers International and European Tax Fund.

Philip Baker is a barrister and QC practising from Grays Inn Tax Chambers. He was called to the bar in 1979, began practising in 1987 and took silk in 2002. He specialises in international tax issues, with a particular emphasis on double tax conventions, and on European Union law and taxation. He has a particular interest in the European Convention on Human Rights and taxation.

  Prof. Philip Baker

Before moving into practice, he taught law for seven years at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University. He was subsequently a visiting professorial fellow and joint head of the School of Tax Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, and is now a senior visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London University. He is the author of Double Taxation Conventions and International Tax Law and the editor of the International Tax Law Reports.

Frans Vanistendael Lectures
The inaugural address of Philip Baker will take place on Friday 2 March 2012 as a closure to the 5th edition of the Frans Vanistendael Lectures 2012 in Leuven, Belgium. The Frans Vanistendael Lectures will deal with the subject of CCCTB.


European Tax College

Graduation 2011
On Tuesday 6 September the ETC students of 2010-2011 had their master thesis defence. First a presentation had to be held, followed by the actual defence of the thesis face to face with the examination committee. All defending students passed and to celebrate a dinner was organized for all graduates with family, friends, professors and the new ETC students of 2011-2012.

We congratulate all graduates of 2011 and wish them all the best for the future!

 

Application 2012-2013
It is now possible to apply for admission to the program of European and International Taxation for the academic year 2012-2013.

ETC Moot Court Competition

In Leuven, Belgium, the Moot Court Competition will be held this academic year from Sunday 26 February up to and including Saturday 3 March 2012. On this last day the finals will be held. A maximum of 16 teams will compete in the competition. For more information on the Moot Court Competition please go to the website.


EUCOTAX Wintercourse

This academic year the EUCOTAX Wintercourse will be organized in Lodz, Poland from 12-19 April 2012 and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary! The general theme is “Global International Taxation; From national tax systems towards global tax systems” and is divided into the following 6 subthemes which will be studied and explored in a thesis by the students:

  • Principles and standards of transnational taxation
  • Harmful Tax Competition in the context of transnational transactions
  • Allocation of income between states
  • Anti-abuse
  • Taxation of transnational transactions of financial institutions and financial instruments
  • Calculation of the tax base

    During workshops, supervised by professors and researchers, the differences between the national point of view of each country for each subtheme will be discussed by the students. The results of how to deal with and overcome these differences will be presented and written in a paper at the end of the Wintercourse.

    13 Universities from 12 countries will be participating in the program. Newcomer to the EUCOTAX Wintercourse this year is the University of Zurich.

    Conference Tax Treaty Case Law around The Globe 2012

    From 14-16 June 2012, the 2nd edition of the Conference ‘Tax Treaty Case Law around the Globe’ will be organized in Tilburg, The Netherlands, by the European Tax College, in joint venture with the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law, WU, Vienna.  

    This Conference aims at presenting and discussing the most interesting Tax Treaty Cases which will be decided on in 2011 all over the world. Outstanding experts will present the most relevant decisions taken in their countries. These decisions will be divided by subject over several conference sessions.

    Afterwards, the scientific results of the Conference will be published in a book.
